Humorless, silent, and
broken. Three words to sum up one of the world’s most infamous
people. She is often seen with Miguel Lucalus. The duo being famous
in Lutenia, and slowly, the rest of the world. She is the second in
command of the Regal Guard, diligently working to keep the Shadow
Council in line.
Vespera is a slender woman that is fairly tall, standing at just
under 6 feet. She has long red hair that is braided to form a
ponytail, with a few small strands of hair that stick out at the
front. She has lightly colored hazelnut eyes that rarely open
themselves more than halfway. Underneath her right eye is an upside
down red triangle which has no apparent purpose. Vespera wears a
clean white uniform with two sets of black buttons running down the
front of her jacket. Her uniform has a combination of red and gold
trimmings with a set of white gloves for each hand. The rest of her
attire consist of simply black pants and boots.
Vespera was born during the start of the Myreison War. It was with
careful hiding and running in her childhood that allowed herself and
her parents to see the war through to the end without anyone being
left behind. With what seemed to be a golden age ahead of
coexistence between the two races, it would be a perfect time to
grow up and watch the world become remolded. Her father was a
pioneering scientist in the new field of biomechanics, studying the
medical implications of hybrid technology. Her mother on the other
hand was a devoted church going woman, she was nearly dependant on
her faith. An ironic coupling for husband and wife, but regardless
they proved to be good parents to the young Vespera, and living in
the new city of Lutenia was just a bonus in her favour.
One
day as a child she ventured to her father’s lab, as it was close to
their home since he owned the facilities. She wished to visit as
many children would want to visit their parents at work. However she
found the lab deserted without a single light on, along with a
strange smell in the air. She turned on a light and her young mind
quickly learned of what a gas leak was, and what would happen if a
spark was created from turning a switch on.
The
explosion shook the city, and tore her father’s heart to pieces. He
found his daughter in just as many different parts in the rubble. As
a scientist in the field of medical research, he invoked his fellow
scientists to help him in a desperate endeavor. Together they
preserved what was left of Vespera’s body and worked tirelessly to
perfect the techniques to infuse the body with Myreison technology
successfully. After countless trials on cadavers the first and only
shot at the operation was performed; it was a success. The father
had brought back his daughter from beyond the grave and out of the
reaper’s grasp, with a small little inverted triangle under the eye
to show for it all. The medical community was ecstatic over the
possible implications, but the moral dilemma that all scientists can
not fathom erupted throughout society, particularly in Vespera’s own
mother.
She
did not believe that what her husband did was right. What God has
taken, it can not be taken back. She had no daughter in her eyes,
and confronted her husband about it. She demanded the death of the
blasphemous demon that resembled her former child. Vespera’s father
defended what he had done to the bitter end, refusing to lose his
daughter once more, he could not bear it. But as time progressed his
wife became deranged, consumed by what he had done, it was taking a
toll on their marriage and on the young girl who peeked on their
arguments.
Vespera grew up in the white walled laboratory, isolated from the
world except her father and the other scientists that helped in her
resurrection. However, Vespera’s father-whether it was good or not,
was a true scientist. He had discovered a way to infuse Myreison
technology into the human body to bring back the dead, could he do
more? Soon he and his accomplices began to test Vespera’s abilities,
rudimentary things to which Vespera didn’t mind as it gave her
“quality time” with her father. Similar procedures were carried out
on the donated bodies of other people, the young, the old, they were
all being used for test subjects. Unbeknownst to her, her father
began to lie about what he was really doing.
As
his wife became more deranged, she began to attack him or his
accomplices, she was trying to get rid of the “demon” herself. And
soon Vespera’s father began to stock up on weaponry to protect
himself, and of course, upgrading the best weapon in his entire
arsenal, his daughter. She was still loyal and loved her father
greatly, and would protect him, at least that is what he thought in
his paranoid state. Vespera herself didn’t know about what was
happening to her, only her father and the other scientists did. They
were starting to create a weapon.
It
didn’t take long for the human aspect of their work to be lost,
Vespera was confused as the scientists stopped talking with her,
just writing notes down constantly. The girl having aged
considerably in her time in the lab, unaware of what was going on,
though wondering as she noticed handguns underneath the lab coats.
One
night Vespera desired to see the world again, even if it would just
be for a few brief moments. As the scientists slept and her father
locked himself away to do more work, she snuck out of the sterile
walls of the laboratory and walked out into the night for the first
time in nearly a decade. But by a twist of fate, she found herself
face to face with her mother. She was about to venture to the lab to
have another brawl with her husband, but instead had the opportunity
she had waited for. Vespera on the other hand was overjoyed to
finally see her mother in so long, she had missed her terribly. But
she was soon terrified as the woman that raised her suddenly pulled
a knife out and began to swing it madly at her. In her emotional
state, Vespera soon learned that the routine maintenance her father
said he was doing was a lie as jets of fire erupted from her hands,
effectively reducing her mother to a charred corpse.
Vespera was in total shock from killing her mother, and quickly made
her way back to the lab, seeking out her father. She wanted to know
what had happened, how she was able to do such a thing, and possibly
be held by her father, being told it would be alright. There was no
such thing as she burst into his office, in tears and telling of
what happened, apologizing profusely to her high strung and paranoid
father. He believed that his creation had turned on him, not
listening to a word of what his daughter had to say, and took out
his handgun to shoot. Vespera unleashed her flames once more, the
end result being the destruction of the lab this time.
With
the blood of both her parents on her mind she had no family. Vespera
soon ended up in the care of one of the other scientists, but he
only desired to further the development of the biological weapon.
Vespera quickly learned of what her father was really doing to her,
why he no longer looked her in the eye, or even spoke to her; she
stopped being human. It was how all people of Lutenia soon treated
her, as a weapon, she did not seem human anymore, simply the project
of a scientist gone astray.
Along
with her, many of the other test subjects were experiencing dramatic
psychological damage. A good number of them had gone insane. Vespera
tried her best to keep morale up among the other test subjects, but
a good number of them committed suicide. Those that didn’t would
become deranged and some that were enhanced with weapons would go
and rampage. Vespera was charged with the morbid task of ending the
lives of ‘defective’ subjects, as she was the most obedient of the
subjects. After a year of routinely meeting a new subject and then
terminating the defective unit, Vespera had enough of the lab walls
and white coated scientists. Without any remorse or a second thought
she set the scientists ablaze, along with them the laboratory.
Vespera was quickly homeless; no one would take her in, reduced to
living on crumbs and drifting. At one point she ended up in a
tavern. The bartender did not mind her being around, she was a
silent girl that rarely spoke, she had nothing to do with humans
anymore.
It
was on that day that she found herself being harassed by the common
trash of the bar scene. Before she caused a scene, to her surprise
someone else stepped in, and stood his ground to defend Vespera,
saying that no one had the right to treat a girl in such a way. And
in turn, he received a black eye before the men left, Vespera was
shocked and confused at the display of chivalry. The man gathered
himself and took a seat at the bar, offering her the seat next to
him, which she took hesitantly, suspecting an ulterior motive.
Nothing of the sort appeared. He talked casually of his life, of his
dreams, of his hardships. The man was named Miguel Lucalus, a
veteran from the Myreison War. He had become a bounty hunter for
reasons of his own, but he was barely making it in life. Miguel
received a tip from the bartender who was an old friend, telling of
a downed Myreison warship that would go for incredible amounts of
money.
Miguel got ready to leave, but for reasons beyond her, he asked her
to come with him. She suspected once more that he did know who she
was, and played coy to exploit her abilities. Miguel however
expressed how he seemed to feel kinship between the two of them, as
they were both homeless, the money might be enough to start both of
their lives all over again.
Vespera was skeptical, but she accepted the offer, travelling to the
desecrated surface that was below the city of Lutenia. There the two
snuck through the battlefields and past the mutated life to find the
massive warship sitting in the ground. Miguel rushed in to get to
it, but was quickly confronted by a terrifying creature, the result
of the war years. Armed with nothing but a handgun he stood no
chance, and began to run, leaving Vespera behind. She thought that
he was truly like all the rest, but as the beast turned to strike
her down, she found herself being forced out of the way, Miguel had
comeback for her, and took the attack in the square of his back for
her.
Vespera had never seen a person do something for her like that,
risking their life for someone who was no longer human. She
unleashed her fires upon the beast that struck Miguel down and
quickly went to his side, to find that he was only injured, but
still alive. All of a sudden she gained back some of her humanity
from the act of heroism, enough to find a calling in life again. She
decided to take on Miguel’s dream, he wanted to stop another war
from ever happening again. There were still good innocent lives in
the world, and despite either of their experiences, it was worth
protecting.
However, Vespera still remains emotionally scarred, damaged. She
still cannot find the ability to trust in the world’s people, as
they took away her humanity by giving her a second chance at life.
It is the sad truth of science, as all the empirical data cannot
predict the effects on the human psyche, nor can science repair the
damage done to it. |
